Huggles!

Originally I had wanted to do a massive giveaway celebrating my 100th follower. Well I couldn't. Why? I had the Chinese New Year celebration week going on. But now I have another random excuse to host a giveaway...for my 150th (150th person just stopped following me, oh well their lost) 149th follower! Here's what you can win:

ARC:
Kiss of Life by Daniel Waters
Castration Celebration by Jake Wizner
Soulstice by Simon Holt
Breathless by Lurlene McDaniel
Serendipity Market by Penny Blubaugh
Swoon by Nina Malkin
Something, Maybe by Elizabeth Scott
Heartbreak River by Tricia Mills
20 Buy Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler (subliminal messaging, thanks Michelle for letting me know!)
North of Beautiful by Justina Chen Headley
This Girl Isn't Shy, She's Spectacular by Nina Beck
TMI by Sarah Quigley
Starfinder by John Marco
The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong
The King's Rose by Allisa Libby
Wings by Aprilynne Pike
The Treasure Map of Boys by e. lockhart
Cold Hands, Warm Heart by Jill Wolfson

Paperback:
Hottie by Jonathan Bernstein
Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George
The Hollywood Sisters: Truth or Dare by Mary Wilcox

So here's your chance to win. To earn yourselves some entries:
+1 to +3 if you comment here (the range will depend on how non-generic your comment is. On a scale like this, it annoys me when I have 50 comments where everyone says the same thing)
+2 if you start following me
+3 if you are already following me (google readers count)
+2 if you blog about this (up to 10 entries--must show link) or email at least 5 people about this giveaway and cc me a copy
+2 if you referred anyone--they must provide your name
+1 if you were referred
+1 for a special category which if you think about it is not really that special. What do every blogger like...? (EDIT: lol nice guesses everyone but I meant comments. I plan to reward extra entries if you comment on other posts this month and the next)

And! If you fill this survey out you can get anywhere from 3 to 7 extra entries! It is slightly general so you have a broader range of answers.
1. What do you like about my blog?
2. What do you hate?
3. Where can I improve?
4. Does my blog help you in any way?

To enter you must list your top choices if were to win. This will determine how many winners I will get, ranging from 1 to 3 winners. So be nice and pick only books that are actually interested in and not EVERYTHING. Limits to how many books you can list is so far limitless, mostly depends on the weight of everything.

This giveaway will end on July 4th because I felt like it. This is a US* only giveaway unless I can get some sponsors . . .

*I am always open to international entries if you are willing to pay for some of the postage.

  10. I like chances to get a book in a give away.

I was looking at the covers of the books. Did you notice how North of Beautiful's cover looks like the same girl from Evermore's cover and a similar pose as well?

I think it is the same shot, flipped and made a different color for Evermore with the tulips inserted in front of her face.

Let's see. I am already a follower as of last week when Irisheyz77 recommended I follow you on twitter and I checked out your blog.

I will make a post about this on my blog

    mnbird.blogspot.com is my lame-o blog. =)

  15. Umm, Yan? You seriously outdid yourself! Really! I would probably keep all those books to myself, honestly.

I was kind of confused by what you meanL Do I give 1-3 books choices, or do I just list the books that I'm interested in? Either way I'll just post the books I'm realllllly excited about and want.

Kiss of Life by Daniel Waters
    Castration Celebration by Jake Wizner
    Heartbreak River by Tricia Mills
20 Buy Summer by Sarah Ockler
North of Beautiful by Justina Chen Headley
    TMI by Sarah Quigley
Cold Hands, Warm Heart by Jill Wolfson
    Hottie by Jonathan Bernstein

Then my one-three choices probably are:
    1: 20 Boy Summer!
    2: North of Beautiful
3: Kiss of Life + Castration Celebration (I couldn't pick the one I wanted more!)

You seriously rock Yan. Without a doubt.

  22. Woooo! Congratulations on your 149 followers! Well, now I see you have 153, so yay! Haha get ready for a very long comment full of entries. When a giveaway is this huge, I'm all out on entries.

    I am already a follower!

I blogged about this giveaway here:
    http://flyingsolooooo.blogspot.com/2009/05/huge-giveaway-at-books-by-their-cover.html

    and here:
    http://michellekuool.livejournal.com/14475.html

I was referred by the Twenty Boy Summer group on Facebook!

    1. What do you like about my blog?
I love, love, LOVE your book reviews. I think it's great that you're a bit more critical when it comes to the books you read, so I know that if you give a book a 4 or 5 stars, I HAVE to read it. And your reviews tend to be really detailed, so I know it's an honest opinion.
    2. What do you hate?
Honestly, I don't hate anything about your blog! Seriously, you have a pretty layout, you have tons of FUN giveaways, you're one of the only bloggers where I actually read every single book review.. there's nothing to hate!
    3. Where can I improve?
Haha I had to think really hard for an answer to this one, because I couldn't come up with anything to improve. But from your reviews and the name of your blog, I can tell you really judge a book by its cover and make opinions about the book only after reading a summary, so I guess you can improve by not judging books so much before reading them? Haha not a big deal, I do that too.
    4. Does my blog help you in any way?
YES! The books that I want to read most on my wishlist are always books that you've given a 4 or 5, because then I KNOW that they're good :)

Books I would want (in order, I wasn't really sure how many to put down):
    North Of Beautiful
Twenty Boy Summer (btw, you put Twenty "Buy" Summer instead of Boy)
    TMI
    Heartbreak River
    Something, Maybe
    Breathless

    michelle.kuool(at)yahoo(dot)com

Haha wow, I sure spent a lot of time trying to fill that all out! x]

  23. Me and my puppies were sitting here checking up on blogs, and they think this is a really awesome contest! They also say congrats on all the new followers this will bring!

Here are the top books we like:
    1. Swoon
    2. Kiss of Life
    3. The Awakening
    4. Wings
    5. Soulstice

But I guess not really in that order! Those are just the ones I'm super interested in!

    I just started following.

    I was referred by Ladidadida!

    Survey:

    1. What do you like about my blog? I don't know what your background is, but I love. Not to be morbid, but it looks like it could be the inside of a heart. lol
    2. What do you hate? No room for hate! You love books, I love books! That means you rock!
    3. Where can I improve? I don't know, I just became a follower, and so far I like it!
    4. Does my blog help you in any way? Sure does! :)

  24. O.O I should be asleep right now, but too bad for me. I'll just turn into a zombie tomorrow. I'm listening to a band new to me, so hopefully, I won't fall asleep on my keyboards...and my computer doesn't suddenly freeze on me..

+3 if you are already following me (google readers count)
+2 if you blog about this (up to 10 entries--must show link) or email at least 5 people about this giveaway and cc me a copy
    I blogged about it.
    http://faladidadida.blogspot.com/2009/05/150-followers-celebration.html
And I'll try to put it on my sidebar later. Right now, internet is freezing on me whenever I try...
    And I emailed you.
    +1 if you were referred
    By Ravenous Reader.
+1 for a special category which if you think about it is not really that special. What do every blogger like...?
Talking to authors. Ever taught of them as human beings too. It's not like they're untouchable. So be happy while you can. Later, you won't think much of it, and just think you talked to a human. Yes. A human. Just like you and me.
Oh, and getting books in the mail. Yay for getting books, but then they get so much and can't read all of them, and it's just paper. With stuff printed on it. No big deal. Well. Besides the fact that it hurts the Earth. Sorry M.E.
And! If you fill this survey out you can get anywhere from 3 to 7 extra entries! It is slightly general so you have a broader range of answers.
    1. What do you like about my blog? Hm...I'm not really sure. Maybe the name of the blog. I grew up with that saying 'Don't judge a book by their cover', but it felt so easy to, but I tried not to, so it's fun to see someone who makes their blog name something adults disaprove of. And I guess you're rating scale. It's like when you review a book you don't like, burnbaby-I mean Oh dear! She gave this a horrible rating! I might not read it now! And when you give it a good rating, theirs that feeling of need to read you're review, and go and get it.
    2. What do you hate? Such a strong word...I prefer 'dislike'....actually, I don't, it's just too mean if I say hate. The graphics... *coughsjealouscoughs* And when you're layout at the end starts over... It makes my OCD kick in... and makes me start tapping right now, which is sort of hard to type.
    3. Where can I improve? Hm...no one's perfect...Too bad. Some people are it seems.
    4. Does my blog help you in any way? Sure. It helps me learn other ways to beg for money from my mom to buy books. I could propbably write a book out of it... But I don't think my mom would approve.

    My top choices are:
20 Buy Summer by Sarah Ockler
    TMI by Sarah Quigley
The King's Rose by Allisa Libby
    Wings by Aprilynne Pike

    ReplyDelete

  27. 1. Okay, you should know that this contest is really making me salivate. I'm a total book contest whore. I love bookses sooooo much. (That said in a Gollum voice.)

    2. Just started following you.

    3. Blogged about this contest here: http://ravelda.livejournal.com/337772.html

    4. I will be rummaging through past comments and planning to comment on future ones.

    Okay! Time for that survey:

    1. What do you like about my blog?

I like the clean, easily navigable 3-column layout of your blog. Also, I like that you point out that you can be "slightly harsher" than other book review blogs, because I tend to skim over blogs that gush about every single book reviewed and look for the honest ones, instead.

    2. What do you hate?

Hmmm. I'd have to say that aesthetically, I don't think the banner matches the rest of the blog. Other than that, I'm not sure, because I haven't been reading this for too long.

    3. Where can I improve?

There's a *lot* of contest on your sidebars, which is cool and fun to go through, but a little distracting and/or overwhelming.

    4. Does my blog help you in any way?

It helps me find other book contests. ;) More seriously, I've been following all the book review blogs I can find in preparation for my debut novel OTHER coming out next year.

And here are my top choices:

    *I really really want these*
    Wings by Aprilynne Pike
    Swoon by Nina Malkin

*I kind of really want these*
20 Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler
The King's Rose by Allisa Libby
North of Beautiful by Justina Chen Headley
    The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong
    Castration Celebration by Jake Wizner

*I am also open to reading books I haven't heard of before, of course*

    Thanks so much!

    -Breathless
    -Castration Celebration

*Ultimately, I'm open to any books*

Thanks a bunch for this. =D

  29. Uh, here's a clarification:

For 3., I meant to say, there's a lot of CONTENT on your sidebars, not contest.

  30. "It's funny how we never have enough time to do it right; but, we always have enough time to do it over." That's my attempt at non-generic.

Beautiful blog! Gorgeous background and fantastic content.

    I definitely follow.

This is on the sidebar of my blog and my contest list: http://ajourneyofbooks.blogspot.com/2009/04/contest-list.html

The Book Blogger referred me: http://theyabookblogger.blogspot.com/2009/05/jumbo-sized-contest-at-books-by-their.html

    1. I really love the layout, header and background. I think the color scheme is fantastic and very attractive to the eye. I think your humor is great and I love the honesty in your reviews.
    2. Honestly, I haven't been following enough to find anything to hate yet. If I had to pick something...that I didn't find this blog sooner? Ask me again in a few months and I might be able to come up with something.
    3. See #2 above. Perhaps bolding the title of a book, or otherwise offsetting it from the author when putting together a long list of books. I had to think hard to even come up with that.
    4. Yes. Aside from being a great read, you have some very insightful reviews. I don't like wasting my money so I need to have a good idea or whether a book is worth the time before going out and buying it.

    My top choices? Hmmm:
    Kiss of Life
    Wings
    North of Beautiful
    The Awakening
    The King's Rose
or Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow

    ReplyDelete
  31. So, while I was reading this and getting super excited about the contest, I happened to notice something coming into my line of sight. I really thought it was a gnat or something, which would fly away. Nope. Spider. Enter flip out, stage left.

This is awesome and I'll definitely post it on my blog tonight! http://surroundedbywords.blogspot.com/

    Books I'm interested in:
    1. Breathless by Lurlene McDaniel (haven't read her in forever!)
    2. The Treasure Map of Boys by e. lockhart
    3. The Awakening by Kelly Armstrong

I'm not a blogger, so I can't be a "follower" but I've added you to my blog-bookmark folder, which I check everyday. I really look forward to reading this blog, the archives have been great so far.

  37. I'm a teacher with 5 weeks left til summer vacation!! Yea!! I try to read a book a day during the summer. These would be great. Yan, I love your reviews. Since hubby & I are both public school teachers, extra money for buying books is limited. You help me decide what to spend my money on.

    Here's my wish list.

    1. Breathless
    2. Swoon
    3. Something, Maybe
    4. 20 Boy Summer

  38. There are a bunch of books here that I totally want to read. I'm especially curious about Castration Celebration, the King's Rose and Something, Maybe, but I honestly haven't read a single book on this list, so I want to read them all (or any subset thereof).

I really enjoyed the wacky April Fools' interviews. I also appreciate that you often choose books I don't know about for your Waiting on Wednesday posts. This blog most helps me in telling me about books I might not know about otherwise.

I've always followed via RSS, but I'm a new google reader follower.

  50. My lord, this is a huge contest you've got going on. How can I resist? In the off-chance I win, I better learn to speed read. :)

I just started following the blog today, plus added it to my ever-growing blogroll on my own blog. I even commented on this contest, with a link back to this blog post (http://waggingthefox.blogspot.com/2009/05/rejected.html)

I was referred to this contest via litbites.blogspot.com.

    1. What do you like about my blog?
A: You're self-described as being a harsher review than most. That's not always a bad thing, when you consider so many people can sugarcoat a review.
    2. What do you hate?
A: Honestly, I'm not a fan of the background. It's a little loud for my tastes.
    3. Where can I improve?
A: Oh lord, who am I to pass on advice about blogging. I can only say to try and keep it consistent in terms of content and activity.
    4. Does my blog help you in any way?
A: I'm still familiarizing myself with it, but I like what I've seen so far. And blog reviews have helped turn me on (and keep me away) from quite a few titles.

TOP 3 CHOICES:1) The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong, 2) Something, Maybe by Elizabeth Scott, 3)The King's Rose by Allisa Libby.

There, I hope that covers all my bases for the contest. My e-mail addy and blog are listed in my profile.

  51. Holy cheese wiz! That list of books is amazing. I'm nowhere near 150 followers, let alone the number your up to now. Great job.

    Books I'm interested in:

    Something, Maybe
    20 Boy Summer
    North of Beautiful
    TMI
    Wings
The Treasure Map of Boys (Hello! Whoever gets this is very lucky. This series is awesome.)
    Cold Hands, Warm Heart
    Hottie

    I already follow you.

    1. What do you like about my blog?
    - I love the fact that you are hilarious, but also honest. More than anything I hate to read reviews by people who are too scared to say how they really felt about a book. I know that when I come here and read a review by you that I'll at least be hearing the truth. I also love the .5 rating scale.
    2. What do you hate?
    - I truly do not hate anything about your blog. I don't even dislike anything!
    3. Where can I improve?
    - I guess more varied book reviews? Try and step outside your comfort zone in the books you review.
    4. Does my blog help you in any way?
    - You would not believe how many amazing books I've learned about because of your blog. Way too many to count. So, thank you for that!

Thank you so much for the opportunity to win such amazing books. And thank you even more for everything you do on your blog.

  54. This is an insanely awesome contest! I just had to mention that :) The books you are giving away are so different from each other as well (or they look it since I haven't read any of them, just reviews!).

+2 Just became your 176th follower-congrats on so many!

    1. What do you like about my blog?
I love your ratings system. It makes me laugh every time I see it! Door stopper :) Your reviews are honest- I have no patience for bloggers that give everything 5/5 or A++ or whatever!
    2. What do you hate?
Let's see. Nothing at all. Seriously. I can't even think of anything I don't like.
    3. Where can I improve?
More reviews please! I don't mind off-topic random posts cuz they're funny, but the reviews are why I come back!
    4. Does my blog help you in any way?
It helps me decide which books to spend my cash on and which ones to skip. Also helps me find contests on other blogs.

  56. Hi Yan,

Congrats on your excellent pile of followers and your great blogging thus far. I stumbled across your blogger a few weeks ago and started following. I can't remember where I linked from or who referred me, but I've enjoyed what I've read.

I'm likely a little different from the rest of the readers on your blog in that I'm a thirty-something husband/father-of-three who happens to enjoy YA lit. Because of my demographic, my tastes are a little different than the rest of your readers, but there are still some titles on your list I'd love to win, in the following order:
    * The King's Rose
    * Starfinder
    * Castration Celebration
    * Awakening
    * Hottie

    As to your survey:
    1. What do you like about my blog?I really enjoy finding out about new books and getting a fun new perspective on them. I also really enjoy the random posts/links you have off and on (the llama/camel thing was great)
    2. What do you hate? I can't think of anything at this point
    3. Where can I improve? For what I need, you're doing great.
    4. Does my blog help you in any way? It definitely helps me get a fresh perspective on new and popular books out there since I'm definitely not well plugged into the teen-scene or even the YA world. So, thanks...and keep on blogging. :)

    1. What do you like about my blog?
I absolutely love your blog. It's in my top 5 favorites! I like how you're always updated and adding new stuff. Also your reviews are interesting to read.
    2. What do you hate?
    I can't think of anything...
    3. Where can I improve?
Once again, I can't really think of anything. (sorry that's not much help, but i'm being honest)
    4. Does my blog help you in any way?Definately! I generally try to read the books you positively review, because you're opinions are great.

  64. Already a follower, so here’s what I have to say:
    1. What do you like about my blog?
What stands out to be is that you’re very honest, even if it means saying something that might be construed as a little harsh. I appreciate this because when there are SO many books that look pretty interesting, you help me sort through them and prioritize. Plus, I like that you do judge covers, probably because I know that the cover can be pretty influential when it comes to buying a book.
    2. What do you hate?
Nothing. And, Yan, I promise I’m not just saying that in a gross suck-up sort of way. There’s nothing that I strongly dislike.
    3. Where can I improve?
While I like how you have contest links, books read, etc. in your sidebars, they seem really crowded (on both sides, with each side having a lot of content) to me so when looking at the page it can be too much to take in.
    4. Does my blog help you in any way?
Yes, as I described in 1. Plus the Waiting on Wednesday feature is awesome, because I know I don’t always have time to really look through to figure out what releases are coming up, but this feature highlights that for me and the selections are generally great.

I’m really impressed by this contest as a whole – I don’t think I’ve seen so many books up for giveaway at once! (though I guess 150 followers is a wonderful reason to celebrate; I was thrilled with 1 lol)

So, books I’m interested in (in order, to make it easier for you)… I’m listing a bunch that interest me a lot, but I’m easy going and would be thrilled with just 1
    1. Something, Maybe – Elizabeth Scott
    2. Heartbreak River – Tricia Mills
    3. Wings - Aprilynne Pike
    4. The Awakening – Kelley Armstrong
    5. Castration Celebration – Jake Wizner
    6. Serendipity Market – Penny Blubaugh
    7. Swoon – Nina Malkin

    -Kristin (dazdnconfusd@comcast.net)

    P.S. “Huggles” = awesome!

  65. This is a pretty awesome giveaway, by the way. Been sitting on it for a little while because I wanted time to think. Okay, so I'll get the boring stuff out of the way:
--I followed you via the Blogger Google follow gizmo thing. I set it to be public, so it better have shown it.
--I blogged about the giveaway here: http://wisb.blogspot.com/2009/05/sff-links-sorta-bimonthly-may-batch.html

My email is arconna @ yahoo dot com

I'd be interested in the following books (in really no specific order):
    Starfinder by John Marco
    Swoon by Nina Malkin
    The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong
Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George
    Wings by Aprilynne Pike

(I think those are all I'd like, but if any others happen to have a fantasy-ish element, then I'd be interested in those too)

Now for more entertaining stuff, like your survey!
    1. What do you like about my blog?
Well, I like that it's not horrendously cluttered and generally looks nice. That's usually a big plus for me. I don't normally follow blogs if I don't even feel like looking around for 5 seconds to find the follow button.
    2. What do you hate?
The boxiness of it? I'm a curves man, so I always like curves. I don't know why.
    3. Where can I improve?
Add curves? The honest truth is that I'm new to your blog. I only found it randomly through Google Alerts, so I might not have much to add in that category.
    4. Does my blog help you in any way?
Well, it's helped me with this post alone by pointing me in the direction of a bunch of books I didn't know existed. If that's not a good thing to have, then I don't know what is. Getting people to look at new books is a good thing, right?

Other than that I don't know what else to say! So I'll just say thanks for the cool giveaway! Way too much rhyming there...and totally unintentional...which is crazy as a bear...gah!

If I missed anything, please let me know :S.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Hi !
Well this is the typical "count me in" response... I'm following you, and i was referred by http://proudbookworm.blogspot.com/

I've only one top choice - Starfinder by John Marco.

I'm a european but i'm willing to pay for the P&P!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Awesome contest! Sucks for that 150th follower, he/she is really missing out! And you have 180+ followers now so yippy! Oh, and I was curious, what photo editing program did you use on these covers? I have been using picnik for my IMM posts, but they only let you put 3 or 4 books in each one. Plus this zig zagy picture thing looks really cute.

    Survey:
    1. What do you like about my blog? I like how honest your reviews are. I hate reading a blog where every review is "super" just because the author gave the book to them or something. I think honesty is what we all seek here. You point out the good the bad and the ugly in your reviews, it's very helpful. I trust your reviews more than most.

    2. What do you hate?
Ok, this is a totally minor thing, but your user photo has always bugged me! I don't get what the umbrella has to do with your blogs. It's really cute and you use it as your icon everywhere, so I am guessing it means something special to you. I am just all about the matching! lol. But don't let this comment force you to change it, it's a very minor flaw to a excellent blog.

    3. Where can I improve? Ok, so this isn't a suggestion for the blog, because I honestly don't have one. However my suggestion to help improve trafic to the blog is to tweet more. I am not suggesting you go all crazy like @Sarahbear9789 or I, that's not smart. I am only doing that to win a free book! tee hee. But I will tell you that when you tweet it makes me smile because I know you don't do it often. So I would love to smile more, that's all I am saying!

    4. Does my blog help you in any way? Yes, your blog provides me with entertainment that is first and foremost what helps me the most. I am a terrible commenter, but I do actually read almost all of your blogs on my google reader, and they are so much fun! I especially like when you do interviews/celebrations. The April celebration with Carol cracked me up! Those interviews were filled with random funny. I loved it!

    +1 to 3 for comment
    +3 for already following
+1 refered by Book Contest Links (because my google reader was bogged down and I read it there first)
    +3 to 7 for survey

Thanks again for the awesome blog and contest!

    I blogged about this; http://melanies--musings.blogspot.com/2009/05/current-contests-may-08.html

As for your survey... I like your blog because of your honest reviews. And your new layout. Pretty colors! I can't really think of anything I hate about it. It's awesome! I think it would be pretty cool if you did more interviewers of other book bloggers. Your blog definitely helps me! I've got so many more books on my TBR list because of it! Although I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing!

    My top choices are:

  75. I found out about your blog from Michelle Kuo. I love to read and am always looking for bargain books, so I figured a shot at free entertainment was a pretty good deal.

    1. What do you like about my blog?
I love your design background, and the topic, of course. I'm always looking for new books that could be of interest, but hate the critic reviews and suggestions in People.
    2. What do you hate?
While a contest is a great idea to get your readers involved, you're asking quite a lot for a small return. Sure, 21 books is a great prize- but- for the time invested? You want me to suggest the books I want- I actually don't know what any of them are about, so I'm going to give a generic- any non-fiction, or based on true stories are my favorites. Comedy goes over well too.

    3. Where can I improve?

As mentioned above, make sure the effort v. reward are equal. While I understand you don't want to weed through a bunch of spammy comments and its great to be unique, also asking for a survey, to research books and tell why you'd like to win them, remember/track down your referral source, blog, refer people, follow you, subscribe to the blog...that's a LOT of work! Some great ideas, but would work better for a larger contest. Just an opinion though, looks like lots of people were happy to respond.

    4. Does my blog help you in any way?
Yes! I love reading, so any place I can find recommendations is extremely helpful.

    -DRicc0218@aol.com

    ReplyDelete
  76. D: the majority of the things you listed are extra entries. For instance, the survey you just submitted? That was an extra entry to the giveaway. I only specify that the contestants list the books they would like so that way when I pick the first winner, I can pick the next winner from the remaining books. I am not forcing any one to do all of those things, if you want more chances to win then by all means, do all the things. :)

  78. This is a great contest! I've been quite worried about my answers and postponing submitting. But then I accidentally deleted a long answer, so here I go! I'm quite new to blogging and just discovered your blog and this contest from Melanie's Musings.

+ comment: I very much like this site - the colors and layout are so professionally done. This contest is sooo generous! I've just started exploring YA fiction again, it's been a while since I'd done so and the genre has changed and grown a great deal in the last 15 years! I read the books now for myself but also with an eye to what my niece might like and what I'd share with my daughter (as yet not even a twinkle in her father's eye). And it's such a break from all the legal material that I have to slough through and draft - a whole different world!!

Let me get the other stuff out of the way first:

    +3 I'm an old follower
    +1 referred by Melanie's Musings
+ 2 I've posted a link to this contest on my blog's sidebar
    www.startingfresh-gaby317.blogspot.co
+2 I've emailed 5 people about the contest (from mrolapus AT yahoo DOT com)

+ 1 What do bloggers want:
    (a) fascinating content - interesting material to write about and to share with an audience
    (b) a receptive, intelligent and responsive audience. it's not fun to feel like you're just writing into the ether
    (c) a sense of community - others to read and learn from, respond to and to cheer you on.
    (d) SWAG - free stuff - as shown by the response to this generous giveaway
    (e) a strong light and beautiful laptop!

This is an incredibly generous giveaway. I would love all of these books, but any combination would have me dancing around in my apartment!

    Here goes:

    A. I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE:

    1) The King's Rose
    2) Wings
    3) The Awakening
    4) Starfinder
    5) Castration Celebration

    B. It would be fantastic to get:

6)Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow
    7) TMI
    8) Swoon
    9) North of Beautiful
    10) This Girl Isn't Shy, She's Spectacular

    The extra credit questions:
    1) What do I love?
Visually fabulous! I love the color background - it draws you in but isn't too busy that you feel like you have to get off the site. I also like the layout - the font is large enough to read comfortably and doesn't make the text look cramped.

The widgets are good - I particularly like the fact that some of them allow you to scroll down, thus saving space. Also, the author list and chat with me features are nice to have. It makes it easier to navigate the site.

The rating system and reviews are particularly cool. I think that the 0.5 door stopper category is hilarious and apt! Reviews that don't point out the weaknesses don't add value; there's no point in reading them. In contrast, the toughness of your own reviews do help me figure out what books might be worth reading and what sites I'd like to visit.

I also LOVE the generous contests and that these contests are easy to find since you post them at the top of the page AND in the left sidebar!

    2) what do I hate?
This is tough because I've just started visiting it and honestly, I've really liked everything so far.

    3) How would I improve the site?
Some other sites I've found have a different format for comments. I prefer the type that allows you to toggle between the earlier comments and the original post. When there are plenty of comments AND a rather long set of questions, a toggle would definitely be welcome!

    4) How does it help me?
I enjoy the content - the reviews really do help direct me to other sites and books that I might enjoy reading. I'm very new to book blogs and have slowly been putting together a list of what I like to read and the sites that I can learn from and yours is one of them!

    Thank you!

  80. Holy crap, this is a huge giveaway. Thanks! You're awesome! =P

    I'm already a follower.
    I linked in my sidebar.

    1. Well, I like all the contests (such as this one), reviews, and the pretty colorful layout.
    2. No offense, but I'm not crazy about that layout and that header together. Separately, they're pretty but side by side not so much. I really only noticed it when I went looking for things to answer this question with, though, so I wouldn't worry about it.
    3. Hmm..are you a part of any blog tours? That could be fun.
    4. Yes, your reviews definitely help me discover/learn more about books and help me decide whether or not I'd want to read them.

    I'm interested in:
Kiss of Life by Daniel Waters
    Swoon by Nina Malkin
    Heartbreak River by Tricia Mills

Hey! This is a beautiful blog page! This contest sounds great. I rarely have money to buy books so this is really awesome. I'd like to run a blog of my own one day but I wouldn't even know where to begin.

+2 I just recently started following this blog.

    Survey:
Q1. The blog is very beautifully colored. I love the fact that you have contests. The layout is simple but effective.

Q2. I'm fairly new to the whole blog thing so I haven't really gotten a chance to explore your entire blog yet. However, I can't really see anything that I'm displeased with. :)

Q3. Well, I pretty much like everything how it is but maybe you could spice up the fonts. Maybe different colors and styles. Just a thought, though.

Q4. Yes your blog helps me. I love having to discuss books. I don't really have people I know that I can discuss books with. Also, any contest where I could win a book helps me. :)

I read about your blog on your bookmooch page so I'm not sure if that counts as a referral or not. I guess that is up to you to decide. :P lol.

The books I'm most interested in are:
    ~Wings by Aprilynne Pike
    ~Swoon by Nina Malkin
    ~Something, Maybe by Elizabeth Scott
    ~The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong
~North of Beautiful by Justina Chen Headley
~The King's Rose by Allisa Libby
~20 Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler

  82. You've gained another follower with me
    I like your attitude.

And! If you fill this survey out you can get anywhere from 3 to 7 extra entries! It is slightly general so you have a broader range of answers.
    1. What do you like about my blog? Your blog is not cluttered with a myriad of badges, pics, and junk
    2. What do you hate? I am not a hater, especially on other people's blogs, but I am not a Chat person
    3. Where can I improve? You've got it under control!! Really like the links to the reviews.
    4. Does my blog help you in any way? Of course the reviews are helpful! Giveaways are fun!

The Top Picks for me this time are:

    The King's Rose
Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow
This Girl Isn't Shy, She's Spectacular
    Wings by Aprilynne Pike
    The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong
North of Beautiful by Justina Chen Headley

  93. Hi
I'm another italian hoping to get a chance to pay for the postage (reffered by Suzana).
I'm completely new here, so all I can say is that I like the way blog looks and that I like the way you sound. Manga article is great (completely mistery for me), and last reviews look well-done.
I like books, so anything you choose would work for me, even if I hope for Wings (Aprilynne Pike), Swoon (Nina Malkin) and The Awakening (Kelley Armstrong).
    Great giveaway.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Hmm...I would love to be entered for this one...sounds so cool! However, i am an international entrant...Bangladesh to be exact. Crazy huh? Exactly why I'm so eager on this giveaway; don't have many good YA books over here. I'm willing to cover some of the postage, don't worry:) Maybe that could be settled later?
So the ones I'm interested in are:
    Breathless by Lurlene McDaniel
    Serendipity Market by Penny Blubaugh
    Swoon by Nina Malkin
    Something, Maybe by Elizabeth Scott
    Heartbreak River by Tricia Mills
North of Beautiful by Justina Chen Headley

    On to the survey then.
I LOVE this blog. period. I love the straightforward, honest tone of your reviews. The background and the header--awesome. something's very zen about them. oh and I love your rating system. Very elaborate and minutely divided.
Well, I don't /hate/ anything per se, but I'm not a big fan of the green font on the header. Then again, green never was my colour.
You could improve on your blogroll, maybe? More author and blog lonks would do the trick:D
And of course this blog is helpful! How else would a book-deprived teen be satiated if not by your blog?
So, I guess I'm done rambling now. Ta-ta for now, but expect to come across me on comments for your other posts ( a secret source told me it gets you points. Don't tell Yan:P).

  101. WOW. 21 books. That's impressive. I've been meaning to read a bunch of these for a while, so this is awesome. Thanks.

    I'm following you.

I blogged. I put it in the sidebar of my blog. http://maxsbooksandthings.blogspot.com/2009/05/21-book-giveaway.html

    I tweeted. http://twitter.com/MaxBrown94/status/1941663525

    The survey. Okay. *deep breath*

    1) There's a bunch of things I like about it. I like that you're not picky about never writing anything that's not related to books. This, for instance. http://booksbytheircover.blogspot.com/2009/05/update-on-life.html. You really let your personality show through your writing, and I like that.

    2) I don't hate anything. Not that strongly, anyway. I don't like that you can be as harsh as you sometimes are. I feel like when you write something you put yourself on the spot, and saying such bluntly honest things isn't a great thing to do. On the other hand, I see why you do it. I understand the benefits your honesty can provide. The way it makes your good reviews count for more and makes all of them more believable. It just sometimes makes me, as a reader, feel uncomfortable.

    3) Suggestions? I'd like it if you had somewhere where you listed every book you've reviewed, either alphabetically or by date, or whatever. That would just be helpful.

    4) It's helped me find books. Pretty simple. When I'm in the bookstore deciding between two books and I remember that you gave one a really good review, I'll pick it.

    MY LIST.
    (in no particular order)

    Wings
    Swoon
    20 Boy Summer
    North of Beautiful
This Girls Isn't Shy, She's Spectacular
    Cold Hands, Warm Heart
    Heartbreak River

    My email is max.e.brown.94@gmail.com

    Thanks!

    As for the survey...
    1. What do you like about my blog? I like the background.
    2. What do you hate? The background doesn't go with the books. The background is older and the books are younger. It's pretty, it just doesn't match.
    3. Where can I improve? Change to a summer background?
    4. Does my blog help you in any way? Heck yes, love reviews and hearing about new books!

I'm only putting top three choices because I'd love them all.

  111. Hi, umm I'm hoping to start doing book reviews on my blog soon. I love reading YA (the stories are better). So yep. Thanks for this awesome opportunity to get some great new reads.

+3 if you are already following me
+2 if you blog about this

    1. What do you like about my blog?
I love the books you choose to review and I love all the author interviews. It's always a nice reminder that author's are still human even when they write good books. I also like how critical you are in your reviews. You don't just give everything five stars and say they were good.

    2. What do you hate?
The colors of your background (sorry) I love your banner though.

    3. Where can I improve?
I'm not sure you really need to if you blogged more there would probably be no more time left for you to eat, sleep breathe etc.

    4. Does my blog help you in any way?
Um... most definitely I am constantly looking for new books to buy/read for me and my library and your reviews really help me pick out the stinkers, while also helping me find books that other people might like even if you didn't.

  114. My top – and therefore, only – choice: Soulstice by Simon Holt. Of course, I’m interested in all of them. But I’ve been wanting to read Soulstice for several months now, so I’m fine with giving up a chance to win the other books for a chance to win this one. :)

    My email is: lunvales@gmail.com

    Also:
    -I’m following you now!
-I blogged about this giveaway: http://riddledwithriddles.blogspot.com/2009/06/books-by-their-cover-giveaway.html
-I referred two people. Hopefully both will comment sometime today and I’ve asked them to provide my name as well.
-I’ve commented on some other posts. I plan on commenting more once I’m done with the ridiculous amount of homework I have. :)

    Survey:

    1. -Firstly, I love the design. The banner is gorgeous; it caught my attention right away. The colors go very well together. And I like the fonts!
-I love reading reviews, whether they’re for books I have or haven’t read, and yours are fun and helpful. Cool interviews, too!
-I’m stunned by all the giveaways! I don’t think any other blog has so many.
    2. Nothing to hate here!
    3. I did search around again to see, and I’m guessing you’d rather people tell you if things can be improved instead of just saying everything’s perfect. But I honestly don’t think there’s anything that needs to be improved. If I had a book blog, I could only wish for it to be/look this good.
    4. Yes! Your awesome reviews. Plus, I checked out some of your older posts - now I have a whole bunch of books to add to my list!

  122. Okay, I'm a bit late in doing this but I do want to be entered because this is a super awesome contest for super awesome books being held by a super awesome awesome awesome person. I mean, come on! Flattery has to get me somewhere, yes?? YES????? LOL

Anyway, I'm already a followr. Whoot whoot! Go me!

    As for answering your questions:

    1. What do you like about my blog?

You're always posting and trying different stuff, that's great.

    2. What do you hate?

Nothing honestly, I mean...I don't usually hate things that people do.

    3. Where can I improve?

Oh gosh, I don't know! I'm so bad at this and not helping at all, I'm sure, but it's hard to give advice..I'm always just trying to make my blog better, I don't really mind other people's and think they are doing great anyway.

    4. Does my blog help you in any way?

Hmm..never thought about it. Blogs are always giving me new ideas, so I'd say you help in that regard like some other good blogs.

As for the list of books that I like in order (and would WANT to win)

    1. Wings

    2. Kiss of Life

    3. The Awakening

    4. Breathless

    5. Hottie

    6. Something, Maybe

    7. North of Beautiful

Those are the main ones I guess. :)

  123. sweet jesu if I had even half of your subscribers I'd be happy! ::stares forlornly at hers:: QUE SERRA! I will work harder!

I'm now one of your followers btw (gosh that makes you sound like a cult leader...though I think with over 200 followers you might count as one...)

As far as the mini-survey goes!

    1. What do you like about my blog?
I really really really like your header. I know that's kind of superficial, but its simply gorgeous.
    2. What do you hate?
I think some of your formatting for your posts is a little wonky...well I shouldn't say wonky, its easy to follow and all, but I think I just get distracted by your sidebar chat box (not that I should talk, I have a frakking vocaloid on my sidebar distracting me all the time).
    3. Where can I improve?
Honestly I like it the way it is. I like the background and the header, the text is easy to follow and unfortunately blogger doesn't allow you to 'cut' text so there isn't much to be done when the review gets longish (I have that same issue).
    4. Does my blog help you in any way?
Sure does! I'm hoping it helps me get Kiss of Life by Daniel Waters! :D er...that sounded way more self-serving then I like...

    Books I Most Want:
1)Kiss of Life by Daniel Waters
    2)Starfinder by John Marco

  124. I love this contest. Congrats on having at this moment 241 followers.

    I already follow you.

    1. I like your blog because you are always posting and always seem to have contests.
    2. I don't really like the background. We are going into summer and you have leaves as a background.
    3. The background. That's all I can think of right now.
    4. It helps me by you writing the reviews which helps me pick out the book I want to read.

    The books I want are

    1. Swoon by Nina Malkin
    2. Castration Celebration by Jake Wizner

  125. I think this is one of the best contests I've seen on blogs, at least for a while. Of course I haven't seen every single blog on the web, but still. =)

    I started following you~

    1. I like that you frequently update and have different types of contests like the doll contest.
    2. I'm not to fond of the background, don't hate it but it's not really a high point for me.
    3. I'm not sure. I like the overall blog and wouldn't really change anything about it except the background, but that's a personal preference and nothing really to change.
    4. It helps to pick out books as well as give a chance to win books and other things. =)

    Books that I would like:

    1. Wings by Aprilynne Pike
    2. The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong
    3. Kiss of Life by Daniel Waters
    4. Castration Celebration by Jake Wizner

Really, I was tempted to list all of the books but I decided that it would be best to just list my top 7 (b/c that's a 3rd of the books). All and all, there are only three books that I DON”T want (because I already own them). Those three books are:
    Something, Maybe by Elizabeth Scott
20 Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler
North of Beautiful by Justina Chen Headley

+3 if you are already following me (google readers count)
+2 if you blog about this...do sidebars count?? If so, I put it in my sidebar:
    http://caprubia.blogspot.com/

    1. What do you like about my blog?
I like that you post awesome reviews. I like that you seem to have a lot of fun blogging. You're reviews and interviews are always interesting and you're not afraid to post about your life outside of book reviewing. It's fun to get to know the blogger behind the blog. Your blog is one of the handful that I check on a daily basis. I have about 15 blogs that I hold higher than the others because of various reasons. For you it's the content and it's fun. You don't seem to freak out about anything, even if something didn't turn out as expected. You just go, 'Oh. Well, okay. I'll try to fix it now”.
    2.What do you hate?
Hmm. I can't think of anything that I 'hate'. Before you used to be a bit more harsh when reviewing books but now you've given a few more higher ratings.
    3. Where can I improve?
Hmm... I really don't know. In the time that I've been following you, you've really changed a lot of the little things. I love this current header. One of them, I found slightly creepy (I think it was like 2 or 3 headers ago). So keep this one!
    4. Does my blog help you in any way?
Yes! I really like your reviews. If you give a book a good review, then I try to remember it in case I see it in the bookstore.

  130. I really haven't read too much of the YA genre since my teens. So I am wanting to try out different books and see how I like it. I think I may like the paranormal aspects, but not so much the "teen girl in high school" aspect. So I am trying out various types of books. I am interested in:

    Kiss of Life
    Castration Celebration
    Soulstice
    Swoon
    Something, Maybe
    20 Boy Summer

    1. Swoon

    1. What do you like about my blog? I love your banner at the top - cute as can be, awesome book tree. :) Also, I like the three column layout and the leaf background. I like how you keep everything on the sidebar up more - how you don't have to keep scrolling forever.
    2. What do you hate? I think if this were my blog, I'd get sick of the background pretty fast. I think it's more a seasonal one and you might want to fool around with doing different background for different seasons.. but that's just me.
    3. Where can I improve? I think eventually you should move to the multi-page instead of the side bars (3 column layout). Not sure exactly how you would do that, but it would look nicer if you could get rid of the scrollbars on the sidebars and just have some links or tabs below your banner for authors and history and whatnot. I'm not a genius at blogging, but I think it would make things look less busy and more organized.
    4. Does my blog help you in any way? Certainly does. I'm always in need of making my huge TBR pile even larger. It's also great to see what others are thinking about books that I've read/want to read. Also, I love contests. :)

+1 for a special category which if you think about it is not really that special. What do every blogger like...? Stalkers duh Lol and giveaways...

    1. What do you like about my blog?

I like how your reviews are always honest. You say what you think, and don't hide your feelings about a book. I think this is one of your best qualities since not everybody is able to do this.
    2. What do you hate?
"Oh don't hate. Don't put that out in the universe!" quote of Phoebe from FRIENDS

I hate little, but love lots ^^

    3. Where can I improve?

Your background, Its just, Im not a fan of the leafs :S

    2. There's nothing that I actually HATE, but the only thing that bugs me at it s the widget at the bottom that changes, and that's only because it makes the page run slower sometimes, but I can deal with that. I've gotten some pretty good book recommendations from it! lol.
    3. I can't think of anything that you could do to improve, I think you are doing fantastic! Although I think a great blog like yours deserves a more eye popping banner. Something that just grabs your attention. Other than that I love it!
    4. Hell yea! Sorry foour blog is one of the for the language, but your blog is one of the main blogs that lets me know if a book is worth buying or waiting a catching it later. Your blog totally helps me!

  144. +3 already following (in Google Reader-and now the 'Friend Connect' thing, too)
+2 posted it on my sidebar

    1. What do you like about my blog?
Well I like the reviews (or else I wouldn't be here) but I also like that you change up your header and background by still keep them simple :)
    2. What do you hate?
I can't actually think of anything
    3. Where can I improve?
Possibly move the 'rating system' somewhere further up...it's kind of far down or change the colors of the tagbox so they blend better.
    4. Does my blog help you in any way?
It's a great place for finding out about new books--while you do seem to have a lot of the books every blog has, you also have others that are unique to your blog and I like that.

and the books I'm interested in:
    Cold Hands, Warm Heart
    Twenty Boy Summer
    Kiss of Life
    The Awakening
    Wings
    Swoon

and to keep you from being bored: Ever wonder if zebras stripes are (mostly) vertical because if they were horizontal the blur would make all the other animals dizzy when they ran? No, well I haven't either till just now.

And I wonder if the snowmen and sandman/men ever have conventions--they have very similar names...maybe they get each other's mail (I can be very, very random!)

  145. +2 -- started following you!
+1 -- I was referred (although for the life of me I cannot remember by whom)

    1. What do you like about my blog?
Okay, well like I said, I just started following you, so I don't have an incredible amount to say. I like your background! But seriously, from the reviews of yours I've read (only a couple), you seem to be pretty honest and straightforward. I can't stand when people sugarcoat their reviews. Also, that challenge stuff looked pretty funny! Which brings me to the next question...
    2. What do you hate?
I have to look at Taylor Lautner on every page. Fantastic (note: sarcasm).
    3. Where can I improve?
Other than that Taylor Lautner thing... I haven't been reading long enough to offer criticism.
    4. Does my blog help you in any way?
Now that I'm reading it, I'm sure it will.

Okay, as for the books I'm interested in:
This Girl Isn't Shy, She's Spectacular by Nina Beck
    TMI by Sarah Quigley
Kiss of Life by Daniel Waters (this I want for my friend; I haven't gotten around to reading Generation Dead yet)

Well, sorry if I bored you. It's late and I don't have any random facts to share like everyone else!

    now for a non-generic comment:
I really love books and I especially love to get them for free. I recently wondered why I connect with the written word and discovered that it is because I subconsciously connect reading to love and family. Why do you love reading? What first sparked your interest? I would enjoy reading a blog post about this
